Salinity stress is one of the major limiting factors for plant growth and can have significant negative effects on the physiological and biochemical processes of plants. Among ornamental shrubs, Carissa macrocarpa is considered one of the most popular plants in landscape architecture. In this study, the effects of different salinity levels (0, 40, 80, and 120 mM) and humic acid application (0, 5, and 10 g/L) on the vegetative and physiological characteristics of C. macrocarpa were evaluated. The experiment was conducted as a factorial arrangement within a completely randomized design with four replicates. The results showed that with increasing salinity stress up to 120 mM, growth traits including plant height and leaf number decreased significantly, which was accompanied by a sharp increase in ionic leakage (more than three times compared to the control) and sodium accumulation. Humic acid application, especially at the concentration of 10 g/L, played an effective role in reducing the detrimental effects of salinity by improving ionic balance (reducing sodium accumulation and maintaining potassium) and preserving chlorophyll content. The activity of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes was impaired with increasing salinity intensity, but humic acid application improved cell membrane stability and plant growth by enhancing these enzymes (including a 20.11% increase in SOD activity at the 120 mM level). In conclusion, humic acid application is recommended as a management strategy to increase the tolerance of C. macrocarpa under salinity stress conditions.
