foliar application of nano-chitosan (0, 60, and 120 mg L⁻¹) and salicylic acid (0, 0.5, and 1 mM) on the content of chlorogenic acid, quercetin, gallic acid, and rutin in S. arvensis. Following the transplantation and full establishment of seedlings, treatments were applied every 10 days in three stages. Parameters were assessed two weeks after the final foliar application. The results demonstrated that nano-chitosan application significantly enhanced all measured growth traits and several physiological indices. The highest plant height (87.66 cm) was achieved with the 60 mg L⁻¹ nano-chitosan treatment. Furthermore, the maximum chlorogenic acid content (0.81 mg g⁻¹) was recorded in plants treated with a combination of 60 mg L⁻¹ nano-chitosan and 0.5 mM salicylic acid. Pearson correlation analysis, supported by a heatmap, revealed significant positive correlations between growth indices (plant height, internode distance, leaf area, and branch number) and both fresh and dry weight. Conversely, plant height and internode distance showed negative correlations with the concentrations of chlorogenic acid, quercetin, gallic acid, and rutin, suggesting that vigorous vegetative growth may coincide with a relative reduction in secondary metabolites. Additionally, the observed positive correlations among rutin, chlorogenic acid, and gallic acid, alongside the negative correlation between rutin and quercetin, highlight the complexity of the underlying phenolic biosynthetic pathways.
