Abstract:   (34 Views)
Wheat, as a strategic crop, occupies the largest cultivated area worldwide and plays a vital role in the economy and food security. Drought stress is a major challenge in agriculture that can lead to reduced crop yield. To investigate the effect of terminal drought stress on yield and some physiological and biochemical traits, as well as the activity of antioxidant enzymes, an experiment was conducted at the Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Station of Ardabil Province on 10 advanced bread wheat genotypes. The experiment was performed in three replications as a factorial based on a randomized complete block design. Factor levels included (a) stress levels (terminal stress, i.e., irrigation cut-off after heading, and non-stress) and (b) the genotypes under evaluation. Drought stress caused a 6.48% reduction in grain yield. Results indicated that drought stress caused a reduction in yield and an increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the plants in a way; the highest activity of catalase, peroxidase, and polyphenol oxidase enzymes (1.77), (2.89), and (1.31) was related to the combination of genotype number 5 in the absence of stress and genotype number 4 in the absence of stress, respectively. According to the results obtained, the coefficient of variation related to each of the measured errors was within an appropriate range, and the lowest and highest coefficients of variation related to the experimental error were 19.9% and 2.08% in total leaf nitrogen and soluble sugars, respectively.
